The deadliest day in American history
A hurricane crossed a Texas island whose highest point was under nine feet, and killed somewhere between six and twelve thousand people in a single night.
The city's own weather officer had argued in print that a hurricane could not seriously damage Galveston. Afterwards the survivors raised the entire town — thousands of buildings, jacked up and filled underneath with dredged sand — and built a seawall, which is still there.
