The first country where women could vote
New Zealand's governor signed the Electoral Act and made it the first self-governing country in the world where women could vote in national elections.
The petition that carried it ran to about 270 metres of paper and some 32,000 signatures, roughly a quarter of the adult women in the country. They could vote, but could not stand for parliament for another twenty-six years.
