The War of the Worlds broadcast

Orson Welles convinced part of America that Martians had landed, on a Halloween eve with a half moon overhead.

The panic was real but much smaller than the legend. Newspapers had an interest in reporting that radio could not be trusted. The broadcast is still one of the best-documented cases of how confidently people will describe seeing something they were only told about.
