Amelia Earhart disappears

She vanished trying to find a two-mile island in the Pacific, flying through the night under a waning half-moon, a day past last quarter.

Howland Island is flat, tiny, and was the hardest navigational target on the route. Her last transmissions said she was running low on fuel and could not see them; the search covered 250,000 square miles.
