Folklore #169
Rituals & practice
Anglers have consulted lunar tables since 1926, when John Alden Knight published a system predicting the best hours to fish from the Moon's position.
Knight's theory was that fish feed when the Moon is overhead or underfoot, plus a boost near new and full. The evidence is mixed and confounded by everything else that changes with the tide, but the tables are still printed in almanacs and built into fishing apps a century later. For coastal fishing the tides are real, so part of the effect is not in dispute at all.
