Folklore #170
Rituals & practice
Deer hunters argue about the Moon more than almost anyone, and several long-running studies have gone looking for the pattern.
The folk rule is that deer move at moonrise and moonset and that the rut peaks after a particular full moon. Large tracking studies mostly find weather and daylength dominate and the Moon contributes little. The bright-moon effect that does show up is on the hunter rather than the deer: you can see, so you go out.
