Folklore #195
Folklore & calendar
Slavic folk song makes the Sun and the Moon a married couple, the stars their children, and the waning of the Moon a punishment for straying.
The gender assignment flips between regions — in some traditions the Moon is the bald old husband and in others the young wife — which is a good illustration of how unfixed these things are. Thunder in the songs is usually a god intervening in the marriage, and the phases are the visible consequence of a domestic row.
