Folklore #205
Folklore & calendar
Theravada Buddhism holds that the Buddha was born, reached enlightenment and died on the same full moon of the same lunar month, in different years.
Vesak falls in April or May and is the most important day in the Buddhist year. Whether the three really coincided is not something anybody can check; the tradition's point is the symmetry. Sri Lanka gives a public holiday for every full moon of the year, of which this is the one everybody knows.
