English law once distinguished 'lunatics', who were mad only around the full moon, from those who were mad all the time.

The Lunacy Act tradition took the connection seriously enough to legislate on it, and the belief was mainstream medicine for centuries. It survives in the word and nowhere else: the modern studies are consistent and boring. The belief outlived the evidence by roughly two hundred years.
