The werewolf transforms at the full moon because of a 1941 film. Older legends mostly didn't mention the Moon at all.

Medieval European lycanthropy stories involve pacts, cursed pelts and enchanted rivers; the lunar trigger was popularised by Hollywood, above all The Wolf Man. It's a good reminder that 'ancient folklore' is often a recent invention with excellent marketing.
