The Harvest Moon is the only full moon named for a favour it actually does. It gave farmers extra evenings of light exactly when the crop came in.

Folklore and astronomy agree completely on this one, which is rare enough to enjoy. Around the September equinox the Moon rises only 20-25 minutes later each night instead of the usual 50, so several evenings in a row start bright. People noticed centuries before anyone could explain the geometry.
