The list that circulates today was popularised by the Old Farmer's Almanac from the 1930s, drawing on Algonquian, colonial American and English sources of varying reliability. The names describe what was happening on the ground that month, not the Moon: the Pink Moon is named for wild ground phlox, not for any colour in the sky.
