Plant your above-ground crops on a waxing moon and your root crops on a waning one. Almanacs have printed this rule for three hundred years.

The reasoning is sympathetic magic: rising light for things that grow up, falling light for things that grow down. Controlled trials have not found an effect. What the rule does provide is a planting schedule that spreads work across the season and gets sown on time, which is most of gardening.
