Element

Also called triplicity (as grouping), elements

Fire, earth, air or water: each sign belongs to one, and each element has three signs.

The elements repeat round the zodiac in the order fire, earth, air, water, so signs 120° apart share an element (which is why the trine links signs of one element). The scheme borrows the four elements of Greek natural philosophy.
