Polarity
Also called masculine and feminine signs, yang and yin signs, positive and negative signs
The alternation of the signs between two kinds: fire and air, and earth and water.
Ptolemy called the fire and air signs masculine and the earth and water signs feminine, a vocabulary that describes an old theory of qualities, not people. Many modern astrologers say yang and yin, or expressive and receptive, instead. This site uses those words and does not map them onto gender.
