Time zone
Also called IANA time zone
The region whose clocks share one set of rules for their offset from UTC, including historical changes and daylight saving.
To turn a birth time into the instant a chart needs, the offset the clocks used on that date must be known. Zones change their rules; the IANA Time Zone Database records the history, for example that Britain stayed on UTC+1 all year from 1968 to 1971. This site uses the IANA zone of the birthplace and the browser's copy of the database, and shows the offset it applied.
- Where sources differ
- Records before about 1970 are reconstructed and can be wrong for some places; a manual UTC offset is offered for those.
