Amundsen gets there first

Amundsen reached the South Pole a month ahead of Scott, using dogs, skis and a great deal of unglamorous preparation.

He had set out for the North Pole and changed ends mid-expedition, informing his crew, and Scott, by telegram, only after departure. He ate some of the dogs, as planned, which was among the reasons the achievement was received coolly in Britain.
