Curiosity landed itself on Mars by parachute, then rocket crane, with nobody able to help, the signal takes 14 minutes each way.

By the time mission control heard the landing had begun, the rover had already been on the surface, or in pieces, for seven minutes. The whole sequence had to work unsupervised, first time.
