The first photograph of the Moon

John Draper pointed a camera at a half-lit moon from a New York rooftop and took the first astronomical photograph ever made.

The exposure ran twenty minutes onto a silvered copper plate. The original was destroyed in a fire at the New York Lyceum, so the first photograph of another world survives only as a description, which is a very nineteenth-century way to lose something.
