The Beagle reaches the Galápagos

Darwin arrived at the islands under a last quarter moon and spent five weeks collecting finches he did not bother labelling properly.

He assumed the birds from different islands were the same species and had to reconstruct which came from where later, using other crew members' collections. The insight arrived well after he had left.
