The first miss
Luna 1 was meant to hit the Moon and went past it by about six thousand kilometres, which made it the first object from Earth to escape into orbit round the Sun.
On the way out it released a kilogram of sodium vapour, and the orange cloud was photographed from an observatory in Soviet Armenia — the first artificial comet, and a way of tracking the spacecraft before deep space radio was any good. It is still going round the Sun.
