The first woman in space, for three days
Valentina Tereshkova orbited forty-eight times in three days, which was more time in space than every American astronaut up to that point put together.
She had been a textile worker and an amateur parachutist, which was the qualification that mattered, because Vostok crews came down on their own canopies. No woman flew again for nineteen years.
