Rulership
Also called sign ruler, ruler
The planet assigned to each sign as its “ruler”, whose condition astrologers read alongside that sign.
Each sign has a ruling planet: Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and so on. The traditional scheme, described by Ptolemy, gives the Sun and Moon one sign each and the five visible planets two each. Modern astrologers added Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
- Where sources differ
- Traditional astrologers keep the older scheme only; many modern astrologers use both, calling the old rulers co-rulers.
