A disease declared extinct

The World Health Assembly certified that smallpox no longer existed anywhere, the only human disease ever driven out of the world.

The last natural case was a hospital cook in Somalia in October 1977. The campaign worked by ring vaccination — find a case, vaccinate everyone around it — rather than by trying to vaccinate everybody, which is why it succeeded on a budget smaller than a single modern hospital.
