Titanic meets the iceberg

There was no moon worth speaking of, no wind, and no swell, so no line of white surf around the iceberg to give it away.

The lookouts had no binoculars and, more importantly, nothing to see: a flat calm sea produces no breaking water at an iceberg's base. The Moon that night was a 6% waning crescent that had not yet risen.
